Penny missed her glasses desperately as she struggled to read paperwork she’d brought home to look over. When a knock sounded, she was more than happy to turn her back on the blurred pages.

She answered the door to Crystal Rawlins. “Hey.”

The nanny held out a roll of tape. “Hi. I thought this might help until you can get your glasses replaced.”

“Thanks.” Penny took the adhesive and opened the door wide. “Want to come in?”

Crystal hesitated only a moment. “Yeah. Fariq is spending some time with the children, and I could use a break.”

Penny grabbed the two halves of her glasses before following the other woman into the suite’s living room. They sat at a right angle to each other on the impressive corner sofa.

“How do you like caring for Prince Fariq’s children?” Penny asked.

“I think it’s the easiest—and hardest—job I’ve ever done. Pretty much what my mother always says about motherhood. I’m the youngest of six children,” she confided.

“You’re lucky. I’m an only child.” She taped her glasses together and put them on. “There. It’s nice to be able to see again. I’m afraid of passing King Gamil or Princess Farrah and saying nothing because I can’t see who they are.”

“Have you ever thought about contacts?” Crystal asked, pushing her own glasses more securely on her nose.

“I tried them once—unsuccessfully. At the time I was getting very little sleep what with working, classes and studying. I felt like I had every last grain of sand from the desert of El Zafir in my eyes. They watered all the time. It was awful. Specs are easier, cheaper and more efficient.”

Her only mistake was letting a handsome prince remove them and kiss her. If only the sensation of his mouth on hers hadn’t been so wonderful. She wanted to hate him for the subsequent humiliation, but it wasn’t his fault. She was the dweeb who’d never been kissed. Glancing at her friend, she was tempted to confide what happened but decided against it. She’d had about all the embarrassment she could stand for one day.

“Your mind is made up?” Crystal leaned forward, serious concentration etched on her face.

She wore an emerald-colored silk blouse under a loose, floral jumper of coordinating colors. The clingy material molded to her figure. Her mahogany hair was pulled away from her face and secured at her nape. The severe style made her eyes stand out. They were a striking green, almost the exact shade of her blouse and fringed by thick, sooty lashes.

“Contacts are not for me,” Penny answered. “But you should try them. Your eyes are so beautiful. You shouldn’t hide behind spectacles.”

“Funny you should phrase it that way.”

“Why?”

“No reason.” Crystal shrugged, obviously uncomfortable.

“I didn’t mean to invade sensitive territory. Goodness knows I have no basis for judging in the beauty department.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Look at me. I have no illusions about my appearance,” Penny said, waving her hand in a gesture that encompassed her from head to toe.

Crystal scrutinized her. “Right now I’d have to give you first prize for geek of the week.
